Organic Quinoa is technically a seed, but used as a grain substitute in meals. Its recent popularity as a super-food can be attributed to its "complete protein" profile - containing all 9 essential amino acids required by the body - as well as high fiber content and other minerals.
Quinoa is easily cooked on the stove, using a rice cooker or even steamed. Most Quinoa will need rinsing due to a naturally protective "saponin" coating, however we've sourced a premium quality that has been pre-rinsed that makes this step unnecessary. Some people find that quickly browning the quinoa in a frying pan before cooking adds a little nutty flavour. Flavour can also be added using sauces during the cooking recipe, as Quinoa readily takes on the flavour of whatever it's cooked with. Once served, it will also absorb flavour from anything added to it.
A typical serving size is approximately 45 grams (1/4 cup of dry Quinoa), which yields about 170 calories (3g of fiber, 7g of protein). A pound of Quinoa therefore provides about 10 servings (450g / 45g). Most recipes will call for a cup to be made (180 grams), which provides leftovers for a couple meals and is great in wraps and salads.
